I sell a lot of Dungeons & Dragons but I also DM 5E Dungeons & Dragons as well. Running my style of game has informed what I carry in the store. I obviously carry everything from Wizards of the Coast, but I honestly find many of their products lacking. That's where third party publishers come into play. 5E third party products were slow to get off the ground, due to confusion over the 5E open gaming license, and the vast majority have decided to forgo print and stick with PDFs online. Kobold Press stands out as a high quality publisher with print products that can sit comfortably next to a Wizards of the Coast product. This equivalent level of quality leads to stronger sales than other publishers, especially the occasional 5E Kickstarter items we bring in.

To understand where Kobold Press fits into your sales strategy, you need to look at the strengths and weaknesses of Wizards of the Coast (WOTC). WOTC is strong in rules, as in they have avoided rules glut. Past editions of D&D, every one, has seen the publishers reach exceed its grasp. Here's where I get a bit opinionated. I think every edition has gone too far in expanding their rules and they end up breaking the game. Unearthed Arcana, Skills & Powers, Book of Nine Swords, Essentials, all represent the point at which the game designers went too far and broke their games with dodgy content. The D&D 5th Edition designers have realized they need a slow roll on game mechanics or they'll otherwise kill their golden goose. We're in year five of D&D 5th Edition, and it still feels new and fresh, with only the most minor, mostly balanced upgrades for characters and crazy stuff tested online and only slowly released in print, if it works.

Therefore, nobody needs or wants a third party coming in and offering rulebooks of character offerings. Kobold has several books that do that, but only to add races and backgrounds to fit their Midgard Setting. Midgard Heroes, Unlikely Heroes and Southland Heroes add races and backgrounds that can fit in many D&D game, and they're balanced enough that many DMs consider them. For example, the races in Midgard Heroes include: centaurs, dragonkin, gearforged, kobolds, ravenfolk, shadow fey, and trollkin. I recently ran a campaign with ravenfolk and trollkin and players enjoyed trying something different. They sell well enough to keep one on the shelf, although we sold over a dozen Midgard Heroes last year. 




Where Wizards of the Coast is weak, is adventures. This is not new for this company. Although they have some classic adventures that are worth seeking out in PDF nowadays, it wasn't unusual to have the back bench work on adventures, or in the case of 5E, outsource them completely. In fact, Kobold wrote Hoard of the Dragon Queen, an official 5E adventure from WOTC. I've found the hardcover adventure path approach to be a little bewildering, hard to grasp, and well, creatively lacking, and I'm honestly surprised D&D is so popular right now with such impenetrable offerings in the adventure department. Thankfully the starter box and the Internet with programs like Critical Role have come to the rescue. 

I've personally bought both Storm King's Thunder and Tomb of Annihilation, read them and made notes, only to put them down and run my own thing instead. I do enjoy Tales From the Yawning Portal, which often gets savaged in reviews, but there are gems in there, faithfully translated from previous editions. In any case, if you want to run a "module" adventure, rather than a full adventure path in the high fantasy world of Forgotten Realms (no thank you) you can grab something from Tales From The Yawning Portal, or you can look at what Kobold is offering. 

Kobold excels in the "roll your own" department, as in DMs who wish to create their own campaigns or run shorter adventures. They're perfect for an evening of play, or if you're into sandbox style gaming, where it's your world with adventures mostly off the shelf with serial numbers scrubbed. You've got a few options in this department. First off are modules. If you've been running a store for long enough, you know modules historically sell poorly, and these are no exception. I try to keep one of each Kobold adventure on the shelf, but modules are not their strengths. I've found them a little wonky with occasional unbalanced encounters, meaning you need to pay attention closely as a DM. My group had a bad case of the crabs that killed a party member in Sanctuary of Belches, for example. Where Kobold really excels are books of one shot adventures. 

There are two types of one shot books, those dependent on a monster book from Kobold and those that aren't. The independent books of one shots include Eldritch Lairs, Prepared, Prepared 2, and the new 12 Peculiar Towers. These sell very well as any DM can grab a mini adventure to insert in their campaign. The Prepared books are more outlines of adventures and often take a little bit of work, but it hasn't stopped them from selling well for us.




Before I get into this other type of adventure books, let me say the other area where there's room for growth is monster books. From WOTC, we have the Monster Manual, Volo, and Mordenkainen from which to choose monsters, and this honestly feels like a fairly complete set of options. However, you really can't have too many monster books, unlike player rulebooks. Kobold has two very good monster books, Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex. I've used each of these books for a while now, with Creature Codex being a more recent release. 




Adding different monsters is a great way to add flavor to a game, especially with jaded veteran players. These books sell fantastic, along with their cardboard pawns. Even better, there are adventure books that leverage monsters from these tomes that sell well, although they require the DM to own the monster book. These are The Book of Lairs, which requires Tome of Beasts, which I find to be the best adventure resource from Kobold and Creature Codex Lairs, which is fine, but hasn't sparked my interest as well as Lairs. 




The vast majority of my Kobold Press sales are these two hardcover monster books, their supporting adventure resources, and the stand alone one shot adventure resources. The best way to get this stuff is to order direct from Kobold Press, as distributors rarely have this stuff in stock. Minimum orders are small for free shipping, margins are very good, and they promptly ship. 

My current sandbox campaign has 199 planned encounters, with 73% using the core monster books from Wizards of the Coast. I think this indicates those books are likely enough for most customers. But those books for the other 27% might just be worth carrying, if you're seeing stratospheric sales of the WOTC monster tomes. Here's my break down of what I ended up using, with all the resources at hand, including the very good Tome of Horrors from Frog God Games:



  


An Atari Artbook Because Nobody Is Watching

Another week goes by where he doesn't make a video, leading to a two week wait. No excuse again, and "fatherhood" is still not an excuse because he posted 13(!) Puppet Steve videos in that time. Two were about cereal. I am not kidding, even when trying to hide his past, he still does stupid things from that time.

New video, and it's not the final part of Mario Game Genie. Those videos can NOT be hard to make, just put in the code and record the results.

Ah jeez that is a messy title. Trying to stuff as many trending words as possible?

"I know I like to spend a lot of time on the NES system" Redundant. Nintendo Entertainment System System? Should have done a second take Chris.
Says they're going to check out something cool for the Atari and holds up a 7800 controller. That's false advertising, he's not looking at a game.

Intro

Claims that the Atari was one of the first systems he ever "picked up and played" I don't believe you.
He shows the book. See the cover? Now look at the thumbnail Chris chose for the video. Why didn't Chris use the book's cover? Why did he go for the controversial E.T. game? Is it part of his weird clickbait strategy? "Nobody will care if I use the cover, but if I show one of the games I reviewed in the past and one that's notable" Please, it's not like anyone is watching this.

He comments that they had "the most amazing artists" do the artwork for the covers. While showing Atari 7800 games in grayscale, which do not do a good job of showing off the artwork. Dumbass Chris, could have gone with 2600 games but instead did something stupid. As usual. Not to mention his copy of Centipede has a huge rip in it. Not even a minute in...
"If you pick up any of these titles, you'll just be blasted with it" This is referring to the "cool art". Does Chris ever look over what he writes?

Blah blah blah blah...
Oh wow he brings up History of Video Games. Good thing that's dead. Why bring that up but refuse to mention Irate Gamer by name?

Oh... I see what this video is. He's done videos like this before. All he does is skim through a book and occasionally comment on something. I know he did that with an Assassin's Creed art book.
Yeah, this isn't worth covering. I'm sorry.

I think it's safe to say that "Chris Neo" has been a bust. The views have been abysmal, he barely gets comments about the videos on Facebook, the schedule has been inconsistent, even his websites are dead. As in they've been suspended.
Why did Chris even bring this back to begin with? Apparently people have been begging for it, but now that it's back, nobody is watching. Hell, it took over a month for his Thanos video to get over 10k views. Maybe people don't like this even more boring direction? Maybe people heard that Chris is a crazy conspiracy theorist and want nothing to do with that? Who knows.

Implementing Weighted, Blended Order-Independent Transparency

Partially transparent surfaces are important for computer graphics. Realistic materials such as fog, glass, and water as well as imaginary ones such as force-fields and magical spells appear frequently in video games and modeling programs. These all transmit light through their surfaces because of their chemical properties.

Even opaque materials can produce partially transparent surfaces within a computer graphics system. For example, when a fence is viewed from a great distance, an individual pixel may contain both fence posts and the holes between them. In that case, the "surface" of the opaque fence with holes is equivalent to a homogeneous, partly-transparent surface within the pixel. A similar situation arises at the edge of any opaque surface, where the silhouette cuts partly across a pixel. This is the classic partial coverage situation first described for graphics by Porter and Duff in 1986 and modeled with "alpha".

There are some interesting physics and technical details that I'm simplifying in this overview. To dig deeper, I recommend the discussion of the sources and relation between coverage and transmission for non-refractive transparency in the Colored Stochastic Shadow Maps paper that Eric Enderton and I wrote. I extended that discussion in the transparency section of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice.



The Challenge

Generating real-time images of scenes with partial transparency is challenging. That's because pixels containing partly transparent surfaces have multiple surfaces contributing to the final value, and the order in which they are composited over each other affects the result. This is one reason why hair, smoke, and glass often look unrealistic in video games, especially where they come close to opaque surfaces.

One reason that transparency is challenging is that ordering surfaces is hard. There are many algorithms for ordering elements in a data structure, but they all have a cost in both time and space that is unacceptable for real-time rendering on current computer graphics hardware. If every pixel can store ten partially transparent surfaces, then a rendering system would require ten times as much memory to encode and sort those values. (I'm sure that 100 GB GPUs will exist in a few years, but they don't today, and when they do, we might not want to use all of the memory just for transparency.) It is also not possible to order the surfaces themselves because there is not necessarily any order in which multiple surfaces overlap correctly. For example, as few as three triangles can thwart the sorting approach.

Recently, a number of efficient algorithms for order-independent transparency (OIT) were introduced. These approximate the result of compositing multiple layers without the ordering constraint or unbounded intermediate storage. This can yield two benefits. The first is that the worst cases of incorrectly composited transparency can be avoided. No more bright edges on a tree in shadow or characters standing out from the fog they were hiding in. The second benefit is that multiple transparent primitives can be combined in a single draw call. That gives a significant increase in performance for scenes with lots of foliage or special effects.

All OIT methods make approximations that affect quality. A common assumption is that all partially-transparent surfaces have no refraction and do not color the objects behind them. For example, in this model "green" glass will make everything behind it look green by darkening the distant surfaces and adding green over the top. A distant red object will appear brown (dark red + green), not black as it would in the real world.

Weighted, Blended Order-Independent Transparency is a computer graphics algorithm that I developed with Louis Bavoil at NVIDIA and the support of the rendering team at Vicarious Visions. Compared to other OIT methods, it has the advantages that it uses very little memory, is very fast, and works on all major consoles and PCs released in the past few years. The primary drawbacks are that it produces less distinction between layers close together in depth and must be tuned once for the desired depth range and precision of the applications. Our I3D presentation slides explain these tradeoffs in more detail.

Since publishing and presenting the research paper, I've worked with several companies to integrate our transparency method into their games and content-creation application. This article shares my current best explanation of how to implement it, as informed by that process. I'll give the description in a PC-centric way. See the original paper for notes on platforms that do not support the precisions or blending modes assumed in this guide.

Algorithm Overview

All OIT methods make the following render passes:
  1. 3D opaque surfaces to a primary framebuffer
  2. 3D transparency accumulation to an off-screen framebuffer
  3. 2D compositing transparency over the primary framebuffer
During the transparency pass the original depth buffer is maintained for testing but not written to. The compositing pass is a simple 2D image processing operation.

3D Transparency Pass

This is a 3D pass that submits transparent surfaces in any order. Bind the following two render targets in addition to the depth buffer. Test against the depth buffer, but do not write to it or clear it. The transparent pass shaders should be almost identical to the opaque pass ones. Instead of writing a final color of (r, g, b, 1), they write to each of the render targets (using the default ADD blend equation):

The w value is a weight computed from depth. The paper and presentation describe several alternatives that are best for different kinds of content. The general-purpose one used for the images in this article is:

where gl_FragCoord.z is OpenGL's depth buffer value which ranges from 0 = near plane to 1 = far plane. This function downweights the color contribution of very-low coverage surfaces (e.g., that are about to fade out) and distant surfaces.

Note that the compositing uses pre-multipled color. This allows expressing emissive (glowing) values by writing the net color along each channel instead of explicitly solving the product r*a, etc. For example, a blue lightning bolt can be written to accum as (0, 10, 15, 0.1) rather than creating an artificial unmultiplied r value that must be very large to compensate for the very low coverage.

Using R16F for the revealage render target will give slightly better precision and make it easier to tune the algorithm, but a 2x savings on bandwidth and memory footprint for that texture may make it worth compressing into R8 format.

The compositing pass can blend the result over the opaque surface frame buffer (as described here), or explicitly read both buffers and write the result to a third.

I use epsilon = 0.00001 to avoid overflow in the division. It is easy to notice if you're overflowing or underflowing the total 16-bit precision. You'll see either fully-saturated "8-bit" ANSI-style colors (red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta, white), or black dots from floating point specials (Infinity, NaN). If the computation produces floating point specials, they will typically also expand into large black squares under any postprocessed bloom or depth of field filters.

All of the following images of the San Miguel scene by Guillermo M. Leal Llaguno were rendered using G3D's implementation. To show how it integrates, these include a full screen-space and post-processing pipeline: ambient occlusion, motion blur, depth of field, FXAA, color grading, and bloom.

The inset images visualize the accum and revealage buffers. Note the combination of glass and partial coverage surfaces.

Note that this reference image fixes a typo from the one in the I3D presentation:
the alpha values are 0.75 (not 0.25 as originally reported!) and are given before computing the premultiplied values. So, the blue square is (0, 0, 0.75, 0.75) in pre-multiplied alpha and (0, 0, 1, 0.75) with unmultiplied color.
I'm using a different weighting function from the I3D result as well.

I didn't have these ready for Fall In!, but they're going to be getting some paint early next year I think, six custom Night Spinner turrets. I used most of the Forgeworld turret, just replacing the cockpit glass with some from fan-made proxies.




These didn't make it down to Fall In! either but I'm hoping to finish them before the end of the year and EpiComp. They're my Wild Riders, I decided to paint them up in Sunblitz Brotherhood colors.
